Government has finalized the names this year’s Padma Awards 2011 recipients for the three categories of top civilian awards for 2011 – Padma Shri/ Padma Bhusan/ Padma Vibhusan Awards. These Padma awards and the Bharat Ratna will be awarded to their respective recipients on January 26, 2011, which is India’s Republic Day. List of Padma Shri, Padma Bhusan, Padma Vibhusan Awards 2011:
- Hyderabad-born Indian cricketer, VVS Laxman has been awarded the Padma Shri for his outstanding performance in Indian cricket.
- Yesteryear film actress, Waheeda Rahman will receive this year’s Padma Bhusan for her outstanding contribution to Indian cinema. Earlier, she had won the Padma Shri in 1972.
- Indian music composer Mohammed Zahur “Khayyam” Hashmi, better known as Khayyam has been declared the winner of 2011′s Padma Vibhusan. Earlier in 2007, Khayam was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in Creative Music, by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India.
- Shooter Gagan Narang, wrestler Sushil Kumar, actress Kajol, Tabbu and actor Irfan Khanwill be conferred of Padma Shri awards.
The Bharat Ratna is likely to be awarded to none other than cricketing legend, Sachin Tendulkar. Tendulkar’s name has already been nominated for the 2011 Bharat Ratna awards, confirmed Ambika Soni, the Information and Broadcasting Minister.

The government has received nomination of 1,303 names for the three categories of top civilian awards for 2011. An RTI reply from the home ministry has revealed that the list has names of a chief minister and another ex-chief minister for the Padma Awards for their literary works and achievement in the field of instrumental music. The RTI was filed by activist Subhash Aggarwal. The ministry has received maximum nominations under the categories of social work, health and medicine, science and engineering besides 156 Indians living abroad.
Uttarakhand chief minister Ramesh Pokhriyal who is popularly known as ‘Nishank’ in his home state for his literary works has been nominated under literature and education category. Similarly, former Orissa chief minister Giridhar Gamang has been nominated under the ‘instrumental music’ category. The government has also received nominations of Satyendra Dubey and Manjunath Sanmugham, who were murdered for fighting against corruption. Yoga guru Baba Ramdev, fashion designer Ritu Beri and shooter Tejaswami Sawant are few of the prominent names who have been nominated for the Padma Awards, which would be announced on the eve of Republic Day. The list also includes names of Bollywood stars Jaya Prada, Priyanka Chopra and Salman Khan.
