Robert Kubica injured seriously in F1 car crash

Polish Formula One driver Robert Kubica suffered serious injuries after being involved in a high-speed car accident during a trial run for the Andora Rally in Italy.

The 26-year-old driver’s car left the track and hit a wall just a couple of miles after he started the race. It took almost two hours to extract Kubica from the wreckage after which he was immediately rushed to the hospital in a chopper.

Surgeons at a hospital in northern Italy were trying to restore his right hand’s functionality, the driver’s manager said.

“There are complications related to the functioning of his hand. There is an operation going on now, micro-surgery, that will fix all the connections,” Kubica’s manager Daniele Morelli said from outside the hospital emergency room.

The Lotus Renault driver is recovering well after the surgery. However he is unlikely to start the new season of Formula 1 beginning in Bahrain on March 13.

Kubica had finished eighth last year in the driver’s championship.
