Pune fc and army red won their quarterfinal league matches on friday defeating indian air force (iaf) and madras applied science group (meg) bangalore respectively.

Pune fc thrashed indian air force (iaf) 2-0 while army red were equally good in drubbing meg bangalore 3-0 at the ambedkar stadium.

Pune were playing in a dominating mood since the beginning and took the lead in the 47th minute through brazilian striker edmar figueira. It scored again through veteran striker paresh shivalkar in the 74th minute.

Then again, meg were in disarray in the match against army red and lost their second match consecutively in the tournament.

Army red took the lead in the 17th minute through an own goal from vineet. The ball hit the defender while on its way into the internet. Meg were as well inconsistent against churchill brothers in the last match.

Even though, meg fought back strongly in the second half, they were refused any goal by the army defenders.

Army red scored two more goals through their strikers sekhohao tuboi and gordon zoram channa to seal the match in their favour.

‘it was a good performance, but if we want to win the tournament, we have to advance a lot. It’s a tough group and we can’t take anyone for granted. There are a number of glitches and we have to fix them,’ pune fc coach derek pereira said after the win.

Sporting clube-de goa will take on jct in a should-win encounter on saturday to book a place in quarterfinals. In another clash, federation cup champions east bengal will play against air india. Air india lost to salgaocar 3-1 on thursday. So, they’ll seek either a win or a draw to salvage the pride.
