| Rains? Stay at home, say cops |

The average Hyderabadi is not about to go singing in the rain, not unless they sing a dirge. City dwellers dread the serpentine traffic snarls and water logging that are now synonymous with the monsoons. But, last week, when the city police took to news channels and radio stations to alert people about the “situation,” requesting them to stay indoors during what at best was a series of light showers, even cynics chuckled at public servant paranoia of the traffic problems. Acknowledging that the announcements were made with public safety in mind, Hyderabadi youngsters believe not enough is being done to prevent flooding and traffic snafus.
Raashi Pachisia, a Nift student says, “The problem is Hyderabad is not used to constant rains. Just a little rain can waterlog roads thanks to a bad drainage system. But instead of asking citizens to stay indoors, cops and the GHMC should work towards solving these problems. We cannot bring life to a halt because of a slight drizzle. Besides, Hyderabad doesn’t even receive a heavy downpour like Mumbai does. Every year it is the same story; makes one wonder where all our tax money goes.”
While Naren Yadav, an engineering graduate, appreciates the effort by the traffic cops to ensure public safety, he believes they need to work in association with the municipality to make the city a better place. “Everybody leads a busy life and light showers are not reason enough to stay home. Even on days when there is a heavy downpour people cannot afford to bunk college or work. And with the city growing by leaps and bounds, officials need to start addressing such problems.”
However, Zeeshan Mirza, a student at Muffakham Jah College, differs. “Cops abroad use radio stations to warn the public about problem areas. I think it is great that the city traffic police are also using the same means. Alerts save people the trouble of getting stuck in a snarl and having their plans go awry.”
