Bangalore continued to shiver on Sunday with the maximum temperature during the day dropping to 12 degrees Celsius. This year, drastic drop in the maximum temperature and “bone chilling winds” have unleashed havoc in the city.

Blame it on the plummeting mercury if you woke up with a shiver on Sunday morning. The temperatures in some parts of Bangalore dropped as low as 12 degrees while in the central parts; it went down to 14 degrees, something unusual for this part of the year. If it was chilly in the city, it was even worse in places like Raichur and Bijapur which recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the last 119 years by registering 7.3 degrees and 6 degrees respectively.

The weatherman attributed this to cold wave conditions in the northern parts of the state. B. Puttanna, director, Indian Meteorological Department, Bangalore, said that the observatories in Bijapur and Raichur commenced operations in 1891 and is situated in open fields. “This could have led to a further dip in temperatures,” the official felt. The cold wave in the northern parts of the state is expected to continue till mid January.

The officer added that on Sunday, three weather recording centres — HAL Airport, Yelahanka Air Force Station and Bangalore International Airport — recorded the lowest minimum of 12 degrees in the early morning hours.
“The IMD had predicted lower temperatures up to 13 degrees in the city’s outskirts. But on Sunday, the temperatures were 3 degree below the average minimum temperature of Bangalore in winter. We are expecting the temperature to dip by another degree or two in the coming days,” Mr Puttanna said.
