Rs 11,494 crore. By its own account, that's the amount the government has spent on hosting the Commonwealth Games. Virtually every Games project has witnessed a multiple increase in its budget.

Yet, when it comes to rewarding the sportspersons who will actually bring glory to the nation, the government's generosity seems to dry up.

According to highly placed sources in the sports ministry, the award money for the Delhi Games 2010 may be the same as in the Commonwealth Games 2006 in Melbourne: athletes getting gold medals were given Rs 10 lakh as prize money while silver medals fetched Rs 5 lakh and bronze Rs 3 lakh.

This marks a considerable reduction from the incentive in 2002, when the government had given Rs 20 lakh for the gold medal and Rs 15 lakh and Rs 10 lakh respectively to silver and bronze winners.
