NEW DELHI: The President of the United States of America, Barack Hussein Obama, made a historic speech in the Indian Parliament (Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha) on Monday evening.
Barack Obama’s speech in Parliament was applauded by the BJP and other political parties but the Left parties did not seem to be amused, saying that Obama had not offered anything tangible. The Left also warned the Government not to succumb to US pressure on strategic and economic issues.
Appreciating Barack Obama’s Parliament speech, the BJP veteran LK Advani said, “In today’s speech, he (Obama) has met with the expectations of the Indian people,”. Advani was also amused by Obama’s references to Mahatma Gandhi, Vivekananda, B R Ambedkar and Ravindra Nath Tagore in his speech.

Rajnath Singh, the former President of the BJP, also welcomed Obama’s remarks about India’s candidacy as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
President Obama, addressing the Indian parliament, announced the US support for India’s quest for permanent membership of a “reformed” UN Security Council (UNSC).
While Obama supported India’s bid, he also put forward a set of suggestions to India that it must take positions on issues like human rights violations in Myanmar.
Obama also praised India’s rich heritage and great civilization saying , ”
My confidence in our shared future is grounded in my respect for India’s treasured past-a civilization that has been shaping the world for thousands of years. Indians unlocked the intricacies of the human body and the vastness of our universe. And it is no exaggeration to say that our information age is rooted in Indian innovations-including the number zero”.
He again applauded and thanked Mahatma Gandhi saying, ”
I might not be standing before you today, as President of the United States, had it not been for Gandhi and the message he shared with America and the world”.
President Obama also praised India’s multi-cultural society and its social fabric that gives space for the co-existence to people of all castes, class, colours and creed. Obama also praised India’s strong democracy.
He again emphasised how the USA welcomes India as an emerging global power and also stressed the need for co-operation in defense and civil space. Obama also spoke about Indo-US partenership in science, agriculture, economic ties, space research and health.
